Just as we change our wardrobe with the equinox, we can mark the seasonal change throughout the house with colors and textures. In spring and summer we want to be surrounded with softly pastel or bright tropical fabrics, hues and objets that evoke cool breezes and sandy beaches. In autumn, we want to feel warm and cozy, so that being inside feels like pleasure rather than privation.
“It’s just a start for Christmas,” says designer Kate Flanagan, of the way she bridges the months from September to December in her Alexander Valley cottage with easy accent changes like slipcovers, pillows, lampshades, candles and arrangements foraged from the landscape.
Her favorite partner for foraging is friend Sandi Lucchesi, an independent wine education consultant with a big farmhouse-style home in Dry Creek Valley where she likes to entertain; Flanagan is often enlisted to help decorate.
“I’m the only other friend she has who keeps clippers under the seat of her car,” Lucchesi says with a laugh. “We’ve always got our eyes out for anything.”
