The Victorinox 4.5-inch Tomato/Bagel knife features high carbon, stainless steel blade, hand finished at Victorinox in Switzerland by skilled craftsmen. A special tempering process is used to produce an edge that can be resharpened over and over again, so the knife can keep its original sharpness throughout the entire life of the blade. Victorinox handles are ergonomically designed to minimize wrist tension. They provide a natural fit. A good heft and comfortable, positive grip are indications of a well-made knife. A sure-grip handle with a finger guard is valuable feature since the handle inevitably gets greasy, wet, or both. Although cutlery steel is naturally sanitary, materials and construction details of the handle minimize crevices what would offer hospitality to bacteria.

Over all, it's only OK
I like Victorinox knives. I have several of their fibrox knives and love them. I bought this one because it seemed like it could be useful as a small bread knife. It's... ok.

I find it to be a little thinner of a knife then any of the other Victorinox knives with the exception of the paring knives. And, while I expect paring knives to be thin and flexible, I did not expect this one to be. That definitely gave me pause.

The handle isn't nearly as comfortable to hold as knives like the 5" chef/utility knife, bread knife, or bigger knives. It is more in line with the paring knives made by victorinox. So, if you have a lot of things to slice, this knife is going to get pretty uncomfortable.

I tend to use this knife only for bagels or smaller breads. I find that in general for tomatoes, I'm very happy with a chef's knife of the 5-6" size or my santoku knife. I suppose this knife is cheap enough for such a particular use and I will use it for this purpose, but if I had it to do over again knowing what I know now, I don't think I'd purchase it.

It's a pleasure to slice tomatoes - and everything else. A great value for the price. It's very thin and sharp - be careful.

Great for bagels and tomatoes
What can I say? This little knife is sharp as can be and breezes through breads (even frozen) and soft tomatoes.

As a kid, I always thought tomatoes were a vegetable. I still think of them that way, even though botanists claim that because they have a fleshy material covering their seeds they are a fruit. I don’t care what anyone calls them: toh-MAY-toh, toh-MAH-toh, fruit or vegetable – so long as you call me to the table when you are ready to eat.

My love affair with tomatoes started early. My dad grew them in our backyard garden and my mom served them for dinner, sliced on a platter with just a little sugar or salt, depending on her mood. For a kid, it really can’t be any more perfect – or simple - than that. Maybe that’s why tomatoes are still my favorite food. Yeah, I like ‘em that much.

Tomatoes are one of the best, most versatile fruits and/or vegetables on the planet. As an added bonus, we can actually grow our own, right here in northern Minnesota.

But what type to grow? Your choice in the spring determines your serving and storage options come fall.
