Customer Reviews:
smashed fingers
Not a good nutcracker for large hands. When the nut breaks (usually explosively) your fingers can get crushed too. Ouch!

Not your grandfather's nutcracker!
I'm from an Italian family, and we always had bowls of nuts that my grandfather shelled for us kids after holiday dinners. I never realized just what a difficult job cracking those nuts was until my husband and I recently attempted it ourselves--unfortunately using the same flimsy type of metal nutcracker that my grandfather used to use. The very next day, I went out and purchased this Oxo Good Grips Slim Nut/Seafood Cracker. I was a little hesitant, as it seemed a bit pricey, but I brought it home, telling my husband that it was an early Christmas gift for him. Well, he was the first to use it, trying it on a Brazil nut--you know, the ones in the mixed nut bag with the thickest, hardest-to-crack shells. We were both taken aback when, after he had barely exerted much pressure at all with the new Oxo Nut Cracker, the nut easily came apart in his hands! We found this product worked just as well on larger nuts, like walnuts, as did on smaller nuts, such as almonds and hazelnuts. The weighty feel and larger size make the Cracker easier to hold, and the black grips decrease the risk of slippage. We haven't yet tried the Cracker for seafood, but I am confident that the Oxo would perform just as well as a Seafood Cracker as it does with nuts. Highly recommended!

Oxyo Nut Cracker
This was ordered and delivered promptly. For smaller nuts such as Pecans or Almonds, it's a great size and works well. This line of gadgets tends to have better functionality with their gripping ability. Anyone who has used one of the old style nut crackers knows what a hassle it can be to not be able to grip properly. This product makes it EZ to work.

Northern Illinois Birder: Clark's Nutcracker

Because I grew up in Wisconsin, and my bird knowing came predominantly from my Grandmother, Nurse and one undisturbed bird indication post (which I espouse do not reward its call) which covered for all practical purposes birds that resided east of the Mississippi River, I had scarcely appreciation of Western birds. In which case when I saw my leading Clark's Nutcracker while hiking in Mt. Ranier Civil Parkland in 2006 (Lower, 7-22-06), my elementary effect was, "What is that?" and my right hand response was, "I've got to get a paint so I can mark it later."  This mightiness be another commotion that long run led me to to be interested in bird photography. I am unceasingly awfully exuberant when I see a bird I from not under any condition seen in front of, and doubly jubilant when I can recognize empathize with it. The Clark's Nutcracker is parcel of the Jay / Crow people and has an riveting etymology. It is named after the American explorer William Clark (yes - of Lewis and Clark notoriety), who encountered one of these birds in 1805 while he was on one of his honoured expeditions. Clark's absolute job was a map maker, but he also took painstaking notes there the wildlife...

Nutcrackers?

Benvenuto answered:
The Germans are big on nutcrackers, so perhaps from their own forest? The label on the bottom doesn't give you much of an idea where the raw materials came from, though.

If made in China, I'm not sure. China today is getting a lot of iron ore from all around the world: Canada, Australia, the US, S. America, - any place where it can be had, since she is just sucking everything up.

Whatever hardwood is handy. Why would the materials come from a particular country? All that needs happen is that the wood that is doing the actual cracking is hard enough and strong enough not to be damaged by the cracking. In fact, the body of a nutcracker figure might be a softer easier to carve wood while the head, which does the cracking in the jaws is two or three pieces of harder wood. As for metal, I have seen brass, bronze, aluminum, steel, and cast iron nutcrackers, so metal can come from anywhere.

How can you make your own nutcrackers?

liza doolittle answered:
you could be funny this year and decorate a hammer: acrylic paint then use spray polyurethane over....gently sand the wood of the hammer, prime it with "Bin primer" (water based is ok) then paint your decoration and use polyurethane spray to seal it.....just for a change...hahahahohoho...give it with a bag of nuts tied with a bow.

Wood. Various SOFT WOODS. Better ones are metal tho. I have also seen decorative ones made of paper mache.
