What People Talk About Iron Trivets »
tina r asked on Oct 11, 2006:
Looking for books on cast iron trivets that give some history and what the different symbols mean.?
interior designer answered:
I've never come across a book specifically on cast iron trivets, but the symbols used often come from various cultures and countries. Celtic knots are common themes, as are animals, and novelty shapes like kitchen utensils (tea kettles, spoons...). Figurative images (nameable items) are often very stylized, almost abstracted, to the point that you would really have to use your imagination to determine what the picture might be. Many years ago, trivets were made with a family coat of arms or other such symbol, and it's not uncommon to see more recent trivets that were custom-made as wedding presents with intertwined initials or just the first letter of a last name in a very decorative pattern.
Instead of looking for books about the symbolism used on trivets, I would look for books on symbolism in general, and books about antique kitchen items. Good luck!

Seafood Recipe - Sizzling Mongolian Scallops
Ingredients
1 lb (450g ) scallops
1 tbsp (15ml) light soy sauce
1 tbsp (15ml) dry sherry
3 tbsp (45ml) vegetable oil
1 large onion, peeled and cut in eights
1 tsp (5ml) chopped fresh ginger
SAUCE
1 tsp (5ml) chili garlic sauce
2 tsp (10ml) hoisin sauce
1 tsp (15ml) sesame oil
1/2 tsp (2.5ml) five-spice powder
1 tsp (5ml)
sugar
1 tbsp (15ml) peanut butter
1/4 cup (60ml) fish stock
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Method:
In a bowl combine scallops, soy sauce and sherry. Heat oil in
wok. Add onion and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes.
Blend in sauce ingredients and stir-fry until boiling. Serve at once on hot sizzle plate.
For this recipe you will need a sizzle plate, which consists of an iron plate that fits into a thick wooden mold of similar shape. Heat the iron plate on top of your stove for 5 minutes before adding cooked ingredients.
